Intaka Island
The week before last, our Year 2 students went out to Intaka Island at Century City. They were given the opportunity to explore nature in all its wonderful ways.
We looked at various small organisms under the microscope, were given a guided tour around the island, spotting and appreciating the little birds, bugs and flowers around us. After the wildlife watching, were given a guided boat tour around the canals, appreciating the views around us and learning more about the conservancy.
This is definitely an outing we can recommend for the whole family! So much fun was had by all!

Year One Barnaby Bear Day
“Travel leaves you speechless. Then turns you into a storyteller.” – IBN Battuta
The Year 1 students and teachers thoroughly enjoyed an eventful day, traveling from country to country (class to class), learning about the different countries Barnaby Bear had travelled to and tasting all the delicious cuisines each country had to offer.
Barnaby Bear is the bear we learnt about in Geography that travels the world to visit different countries. He sends the teachers post cards which explains in detail, the sites he visits, the transport he uses to get around, the seasons in each country and the temperature he is currently experiencing.
The students in Mrs Cordner’s class represented America, Mrs Cronje’s class represented England and my class (Miss Hierse’s class) had the privilege to represent India. The students flew from class to class where they got to do some fun activities and learn some interesting facts that symbolized the country they had travelled to. They then enjoyed some delicious snacks and cold drinks which each class offered. The students were dressed beautifully and walked away from the day with more knowledge on America, England and India as well as full tummies.
The Year 1 teachers are extremely grateful for the parents help and support in making the day a successful one.

Creating A Virtual World
In Year 1 we have been working on the school Ipads. In our Geography lesson we used a program called, ‘ARMAKA.’ This is a fun, educational game where you can create your own world and put what you want into it.
We have been following the travels of Barnaby Bear around the world this term and we were able to create a new virtual place for him to visit using this program. The students had lots of fun creating underwater scenes, or a Japanese scene, a busy day in London and many more, and during the Barnaby dress up day they could walk around and explore the spaces they created.
Many families have tablets and devices at home and this program can be used by the whole family to have fun and get creative together. All you need is some space!

Traveling With Barnaby Bear
In Geography this term, the Year 1’s will be traveling with Barnaby Bear to various countries across the World. His first destination was London, England.
The Year 1’s learnt how far Barnaby had to travel to get to London. He used many different modes of transport to get around to all the famous landmarks, like an airplane, the London Tube, a Black Cab, and a red double-story bus. It made me think of the movie ‘Planes, trains and automobiles’.
Barnaby sent us a postcard telling us about all the landmarks he visited. He first took the tube to London Paddington Station, where his famous friend ‘Paddington’ was found. There he saw hundreds of people playing music, drawing and shopping. This made Barnaby Bear miss home, so he had to call his mum from a red telephone box. This cost him a pretty penny!
Barnaby took a cab and went to the Palace, where he saw the Queen and her famous Yeomen. The students had a good giggle at their silly outfits. He rode the London Eye and felt really ill. He saw the Millennium Dome, Big Ben and the Tower Bridge. Barnaby watched for hours how the bridge lifted for boats to pass through.
Barnaby just had to visit the monument erected to remember the Great Fire of London, to prepare the students for Year 2. His last visit took him to St. Paul’s Cathedral, which was largely destroyed in the Great Fire.
It was starting to get cold and rainy in London, as it is autumn there now. Barnaby really found it difficult to decide what he needed to take with him, so our Year 1 students helped him pack his case for the journey before he left. I certainly know that he was dressed right for the weather that awaited him.
We are looking forward to the next leg of his journey, where he will continue in London and look at art, culture, dress and food of the people that live there.

Barnaby Bear Day 2019
This term the Year 1’s have enjoyed our Geography theme “Where in the world is Barnaby Bear?”
Barnaby Bear has visited England, the USA and India.
To close off our theme we had an International Day on Monday, 9 December. The students enjoyed traveling around the world experiencing the countries that Barnaby bear had visited. The students tasted different foods from the USA, India and England. The students were taught a line dance, Bollywood dance and listened to Mrs Cronje speak about her home country (England) followed by a lovely story.
It was a fun filled day and everyone enjoyed their around the world Barnaby bear day.
