On Friday, 22 July 2022, Blouberg International School hosted our fellow IES South African schools, Hout Bay International School and Helderberg International School, for an exciting day of sport. The U18 teams of the three schools competed in Soccer, Netball and Chess with some joyous cheers from the supporters.

Even though all matches were played with competitive intent and passionate hearts, we were extremely proud of the sportsmanship displayed by all athletes. It was evident that sportsmanship-values took priority above having good results, a true inspiration for our younger athletes who supported their teams. BIS celebrated victories in all games played. The U18 boys had even more reason to celebrate as they also received their brand-new soccer match kits on Friday.

We are looking forward to visiting Hout Bay International School next year to compete for the trophy.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you back to the beginning of Term 3. My wish is that you have relaxed, recharged, and feel ready to start the new school term. Campus bounced back this week with students returning from their vacation and new students joining the BIS family. Our students are indeed grateful to see their friends again as they prepare for their collaborative learning and captivating lessons.

We have been looking forward to what Term 3 has in store, including  yesterday’s IES Sports Day, Year 10 camp, and our Macbeth production at the Baxter Theatre on August 10th.

I appreciate your positive energy and I look forward to working with you in the new term. All signs point to another incredible and productive school term.

I know each of us wants to make a difference in the lives of our students.

Parents, here is how you can support us and help your child become independent and “own” their learning:

• Be sure to check in with your child daily, about the learning tasks, activities, and assessments they are working on.
• Demonstrate a positive attitude about education to your children. What we say and do in our daily lives can help them to develop positive attitudes toward school and learning and to build confidence in themselves as learners. Showing our children that we value education and use it in our daily lives provides them with powerful models and contributes greatly to their success in school.
• In addition, by showing interest in your children’s education, parents and families can spark enthusiasm in them and lead them to a very important understanding that learning can be enjoyable as well as rewarding and is well worth the effort required.
• Encourage them to complete work to the best of their ability

In closing, I would like to share this interesting post from the “parenting team”, and I would like to add teachers to that team as well – because we are all in this together.

InterSEK is a competition in which SEK/IES schools from around the world compete against each other in a variety of tasks. The ongoing pandemic meant that the 2021 event had to be held virtually. Blouberg was one of 23 schools to compete in this prestigious event, which ran from 3 to 7 May.Ten High school students were selected to participate in the various events: Daniel Moodie, Shaylee Brandt, Jagadish Mohanty, Shameek Singh, Oswald Pieterse, Catherine Fortuin, Angelic Lossy, Remofilwe Shuping, Samia Naidoo and Adithya Maharaj. There students were briefed before the school holiday and preparation began in earnest upon their return to school. Blouberg participated in 9 events, namely Programming, Virtual Chess, Mathematical Photography, Creating Songs, TikTok Video, Escape Room, Artistic Photography, SEKscience and A Look to the Future.

We are proud of the fact that our students made it to the final round of several events. Daniel, Shaylee and Jagadish won 3rd place in both Programming 1 and 2. Catherine Fortuin was a finalist in the Mathematical Photography and Remofilwe Shuping was a finalist in the Artistic Photography.

Our students shone even in events in which they did not place. I feel that special mention should go to the team that participated in the SEKscience with their fingerprint experiments, as well as the team that participated in A Look to the Future, who designed a robot able to dispense hand sanitizer. The chess players played 9 games of chess one after the other, even managing a few wins. Such concentration is admirable indeed.

Remofilwe Shuping and Angelic Lossy looked amazing dressed in traditional attire for the opening ceremony. Their video even made it onto the highlights of the closing ceremony.

I have no doubt that Blouberg shall continue to go from strength to strength. This round was good. Next round will be even better!
