Celebrating Healthy Living
I pledge to stay healthy and clean
through exercise and good hygiene.
I will eat balanced meals every day
to have more energy to learn and to play.
Every night I will get a good rest
To be more ready to do my best
If I work to be healthy and strong
I’ll be happier my whole life long.

In Science, this term, Year 3 learnt about what it means to lead a healthy lifestyle. They started by examining their own food habits and creating a personal ‘food pyramid’ and then moved on to investigating the contents of their lunch boxes, recording findings and making conclusions based on these findings. We looked at how important it is to get enough sleep, researched what happens to our bodies after we exercise and conducted an experiment investigating why too much sugar is bad for our teeth.
The students also enjoyed a Healthy Day Inting. The day was spent with the students participating in some fun group activities, sports and games. Each student was also supplied with a delicious, healthy goodie bag for lunch and we had some VERY tired Year 3’s at the end of the day!

Our delicious goodie bags.

(NOTE: This Inting occurred before school sport was cancelled by the WCED, all content in this article was photographed and recorded before the cancellation.)

We ended the unit with the students presenting individual posters and orals on what it means to live a healthy lifestyle. Students had their classmates riveted with their creative, innovative designs and exciting presentations. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to your presentations! Well done on an amazing job, Year 3!

The Impact Of Kiddies Yoga
“Yoga is the dance of every cell with the music of every breath that creates inner serenity and harmony.” – Debasish Mridha
The Year 2 teachers have started using Kiddies Yoga in class when the students need a bit of a break. We have found that moving the students desks and chairs to the back of the class and playing Kiddies Yoga videos for them to follow has had a positive impact on the students.
Kiddies Yoga has several benefits for young students. It helps students manage their anxiety, improves emotional regulation, boost students self-esteem, increase students body awareness and mindfulness, it also enhances concentration and memory, teaches discipline and reduces impulsivity as well as builds strength and flexibility. The lovely thing about Kiddies Yoga is that it works for both girls and boys which can be quite a fun activity to do. There are Yoga stories which include a story along with the actions that keeps the students in class quite busy with a big smile on their faces.
The Year 2 teachers are happy to see that all the students approach Kiddies Yoga with positive and enthusiastic attitudes. We hope that the students will absorb the benefits from Yoga and continue with it more regularly.

Cricket Practise
“The enhancement of physical and mental development of children is certainly the most important contribution of sports for children.” (Novak Djokovic Foundation)
Many studies have shown the benefits of children learning and playing sport from a young age. However, I don’t believe we need to be qualified experts, to understand just how much fun children have participating in different sports. Whether it’s running around the playground, kicking a ball or riding a bicycle, children do love and need to be active.
Braving the south-easter, the year 1 and 2 students took to the field, sun-block smeared and ready to tackle a cricket bat and ball. Our budding cricketers cheered each other on as balls were caught, hit and bowled.

Dear Parents
It is unbelievable how quickly this year has passed. With less than four weeks left of school, the last stretch is ahead of us.
We had a wonderful sports day last week Saturday and I am exceptionally proud of how well organized it was. Miss Fourie is an asset to the school and, together with her colleagues, they ensured that everyone had a wonderful experience.
Sport is a reminder of the necessity of healthy living and is therefore integral in a child’s development. The sport at our school has grown tremendously over the past year and we acknowledge and appreciate the parental support which has made this possible.
We are incredibly proud to have such talented students across a range of disciplines. Last Friday’s music evening showcased the talents of our junior musicians; both students and teachers have worked diligently throughout the year and the showcase of talent on Friday night was amazing to behold. This coming Friday will see our high school students perform and I wish to invite everyone to attend the performance.
I wish to remind everyone that Hatrick (our uniform store) will be open until the 20th of December 2019 and deliveries will begin from the 6th of January 2020.
We are planning a range of parent workshops for the 2020 academic year and I would like interested parents to email me with suggestions for topics. We have the best interests of our students and their families at heart and I therefore urge parents to engage with the upcoming workshops. Together we are better and we can achieve more.
I wish you all a wonderful weekend.
Regards
Edna

Good Nutrition for Good Growth – Children’s Growth Awareness Day 2019
For our children to remain healthy and strong and live long lives, we as adults need to help them develop good eating habits.
During our last week of Term 3, the Foundation Stage classes covered the topic of ‘Healthy Living’. The discussions were about: what it means to be healthy and what can we do to live healthy lives?
We spoke about how we could make changes to our lifestyle to help us maintain a healthy life, and we came up with a few ideas:
• Be physically active
• Protect yourself from too much sun
• Eat a variety of healthy foods, and limit sugar and fat
We looked at the food pyramid and reminded ourselves what the most important groups were to help us maintain our healthy lifestyles. Which groups were we allowed more of and which groups were to be limited within our diets? Carbohydrates/ the grain group were the important foods, like pasta, bread, potatoes and cereals, however, we noted that brown bread was far better than white bread.
We realized the best way to eat a nutritious meal is to eat a little bit from each food group every day. The students had to take the food out of their lunchboxes and place it in the correct food group, namely fruit/vegetable group, milk group, meat group and grain/carbohydrates group. They all did an awesome job and found all of the food groups in their lunchboxes.
With the busy lives we all have today, it can be a rather daunting task to pack a lunch box for school everyday and hope that it is healthy enough but also appealing at the same time. For our children to remain healthy and strong and live long lives, we as adults need to help them develop good eating habits. Good Nutrition = Good Growth
