Saving Our Planet
In Year 1 we have been learning about, ‘Saving our Planet’ in Global Perspectives.
We also went on a litter walk around the school. My class showed such passion and commitment to cleaning up the litter in and around the school, I am so proud of them all.
I have even had reports from parents informing me that their child picks up litter when they are out walking at the beach.
They have been working very hard and even created their own display for our classroom’s ‘Art and Design’ board, to raise awareness about litter.

Greeting Cards!
Unfortunately, with the arrival of Social Media, the exchange of actual greeting cards seems to have dwindled. It’s far easier to type a message using Facebook or Instagram, than hand selecting, or even making the traditional greeting card the older generation remember so fondly!
The making of greeting cards can be traced back to the Ancient Egyptians and through the middle ages. The invention of the postage stamp in 1840 revolutionised the distribution of these cards, and in 1930, the company Hallmark was established with their sole purpose to create and print greeting cards for many different occasions.
Luckily, children really enjoy making cards. It allows them to explore their creativity. What teacher, parent or friend isn’t delighted to receive a handmade card from a child? Just give them cardboard, colouring crayons, scissors and glue and the results are a work of love.

Countries Around The World
The Foundation Stage students have really enjoyed the Countries Around the World theme. Each morning we used our imagination to board an aeroplane and fasten our seatbelts to set off for a new country. Using a PowerPoint presentation, we “visited” a new country each day. The students have learnt so much about the landmarks, traditions and cultures of South Africa, Australia, Russia, China, France, England, Spain, America and England over the past two weeks.
We even made our own passports for our daily journey – complete with a drawing of the student’s passport photo and some of their personal information.
This past Friday, the Foundation Stage dressed up according to their favourite country. The students delighted in telling their classmates which country they had chosen, which was a real highlight of the theme. The students were also treated to an amazing Inting by Gilly the Storyteller. She skillfully used the student’s imaginations to bring the lovely stories she told to life.
Now that the travel bug has bitten, we are sure to have many world travelers in the years to come.

International Day Of Friendship
International Day of Friendship is a day to appreciate and promote friendship. It was celebrated across the world on Friday, 30 July.
International Day of Friendship promotes the idea that building friendships between people, countries and cultures can inspire peace and build bridges between those communities.
Friendship requires empathy, compassion and concern for other people. By valuing these friendships we adopt a more selfless and grateful outlook on life.
In the Pre-Reception we spoke about what we think makes a good friend, we decided that good friends…
- Help each other
- Play together
- Give friends love
- Share
- Are nice to each other
- Says kind words
- Draws pictures for one another and makes things as gifts to give each other
The students then drew and decorated a picture and gave it to an existing or new friend, they had lots of fun doing this! All in all it was a wonderful day, especially because we got to come to school in pyjamas for civvies day too.
This day can help build a more kind, caring and peaceful world!

The Importance Of A Mother
While getting the Year 3 students to make their Mother’s Day cards and record a special message, it really brought it home to me how important a mother really is.
The students were so excited to make the card and discussed amongst themselves what their mother’s favourite flower is, what they love to do etc. It was so difficult for them to decide what made their mother so special. They had so many amazing reasons why their mom was special to them.
I looked around the internet to find the perfect way to explain how important a mother is, and I found something written by Dr. Ashock Verma. I really found his explanation true and profound in so many ways.
He wrote:
“Mother stands for someone unique:
M – Motivator and the Modulator of her kids
O – Omnipotent & Omnipresent for her kids
T – Teacher – she is the first & foremost teacher
H – Helper – she helps her kids in every way
E – Explorer – she explores the hidden talent in her kids
R – Reliable – she is the most trustworthy & reliable person”
There is really no other way to explain the importance of a mother than what he wrote. Being a mother is such an extraordinary gift, one that keeps on giving. I hope that your Mother’s Day was just as special as mine.

Share The LOVE This Valentine’s Day
Have we forgotten the main reason of Valentine’s Day? Is it just about the love between two people and expensive gifts or should it simply be about showing affection and appreciation for the ones around us such as our parents, family, friends and teachers etc.
The students are very busy in the Pre-Reception classroom making various crafts to give their loved ones this Valentine’s Day. It has not cost them anything except a fun experience as they have been up to their elbows in paint and they are very excited and proud of their efforts. This kind of gift comes straight from the heart!
Why not start in our classrooms, not just on Valentine’s Day but throughout the year! Instead of saying something mean and hurtful to our classmates why not rather think before you speak and give your classmate a compliment or share with them or just give them a turn, let them go in front of you in line. Why not give them a hug or just smile at them. These actions cost nothing!
Love on Valentine’s Day does not only have to be expressed through expensive materialistic gifts it can also be shown with a random act of kindness within the classroom and our school to our friends, other classmates and our teachers.
Lets start with ourselves and share the LOVE not only this Valentine’s Day but every day of the year!
Bonus Facts: Did you know that Bishop Valentine was sentenced to death for refusing to stop marrying Roman soldiers to their beloveds? Or that Mr. Richard Cadbury was the first person to create chocolates specifically for Valentine’s Day?
