As a year 3 group, we have been focussing on kindness in our skills week. Mrs Cronje and Ms Blake’s class have adopted kindness jars. Inside of these jars are wonderful stories of kindness that our children have either been involved in or acts of kindness that they have received.
Here are some of them:
“My sister helped me do a back-bend. Thank you Umi”
“I helped my friend build a puzzle”
“I calmed my friend down and it helped her”
“We gave R20 to the office that we found. We were honest”
“I helped my friend when she got hurt”
“I was looking for my eraser and Keona gave me hers. I did not ask for it but it was very kind”
“I helped my friend build a puzzle”
“I used ice words to my friends and my friends helped my alot”
“I helped my friend”
“My friend gave me a health Pokemon card”
“I helped lots of people to clean their desks”
“In Science my friend and I helped each other”
“I gave play-dough to my friend”

“It was my birthday and I gave everyone their favourite doughnut”
“My friend had nobody to play with so I played with him”
Even if we don’t have physical kindness jars in our homes, why not begin to collect your kindness memories in your heart?

Kind, Caring and Encouraging
This week has been extra special to the BIS family, as we have been celebrating the BIS Kindness Challenge for 2023. This wonderful initiative was introduced by our amazing school counsellor, Kayla Smith, and is targeted at the Year 4 to 12 students.
The goal is to spread kindness throughout our school this month, ensuring that it is a value our students and staff uphold at BIS.
Students are encouraged to show each other kindness by doing a variety of challenges and tasks. Some of these activities include:
- The Kindness Challenge: There are multiple random acts of kindness that students are challenged to complete. Such as: Write a list of 5 things that you love about yourself or Make sure your pets know how much they’re loved!
- A Kindness Tree: This tree will be popping up on a display board and it is going to blossom with the handprints of students containing kind messages and pictures.
- Mirror Motivation: Teachers will leave a motivational or kind message for students that will be added to the bathroom mirrors.
- Kindness Stone: Students decorate a stone with kind words that will be added to our garden.
- Chain of Kindness: Students had to reflect and write down a time that someone was kind to them. This will be added together to form a long kindness paper chain.
- “Caught you being kind” vouchers: These are given to students when they complete random acts of kindness. This will be kept for a surprise towards the end of the Kindness Challenge!
Class 5RdP has our very own No Drama Llama Award that is handed out at the end of every week to a student that has shown kind, caring and encouraging behaviour.
We look forward to seeing the entire school participate in the BIS Kindness Challenge and spread kindness like confetti!

News From The BIS Interact Club
Our Interactors have been very busy the past few weeks with various activities:
In our last week of school, we dropped off the collections for Honey’s Garden at their offices in Leadville Dog Park, Sunningdale. They were thrilled to receive all the goods! Thank you for your generous donations.
We received an invitation for 10 girls to attend The “Stand Up and Stand out” Girls’ Seminar organized by the Ukhozi Girls Organization. The aim of this girls only organization is to motivate and empower girls to reach their dreams regardless of their background limitations.
The Seminar was titled “Unashamed Conversations” and it took place at Inkwenkwezi High School in Joe Slovo. Other schools from the area were also invited.
Upon our arrival, we were welcomed by Nqobizitha Hobane, founder of Ukhozi Girls, who thanked us for the collections of female toiletries and stationery donated by our school.
We then had a chance to introduce ourselves to guests from other schools while we were offered some tea and delicious muffins.
The program consisted of various performances by different schools which included singing, dancing, drama, poetry, our own Altesse Chimbalanga with some inspirational words about the beauty of being a woman, as well as some guest speakers.
We all agreed it was a great experience to be able to gather and speak openly about issues that affect young girls and women and be advocates of change in our communities and society at large.
On Saturday 2nd July, our Interact President, Rifqah Price, was invited to attend the annual Induction Breakfast for the Rotary Club of Blouberg. This was a great opportunity for all members of Rotary (including Interact and Rotaract) to get together and share ideas and inspire each other. It was also the annual nomination of the new Board members.
I was very pleased to witness two of our past students at BIS being elected members of the 2022/2023 Rotaract Board: Katherine Lott (Vice President) and Beverly Ndaramu (Secretary). Congratulations to these young ladies!
On Saturday 9th July, the BSA Cup soccer tournament took place at Tafelberg School. One of the participant teams were the under 12 boys from Dunoon Pioneer Soccer Club.
The Interact Club attended the event and had the opportunity to hand out 20 kits (tops and shorts) to the team. They were very happy to receive new uniforms for the winter season.
A special thank you to BIS families for their support during our Spur waitering event, whose generosity made it possible to provide the soccer gear to these boys.
Last Friday, the Interact Club of Edgemead High school hosted a workshop for all Interact Clubs in the area to attend.
The event lasted around 3 hours and included ice breakers, games to get to know each other, various guest speakers ranging from the current President of Rotaract to senior experienced members of Rotary and the current youngest Blouberg Rotary member, as well as team building activities and idea sharing circles.

BIS Interact Club – Peace Home Homework Programme
One of BIS Interact’s main focuses is improving the quality and accessibility of education in our communities.
Next week our school will be celebrating Book Week. In commemoration of this, the BIS Interact Club will continue their weekly visits to ‘Peace Home’, a shelter for children with past challenges, who now have a safe environment thanks to their loving adoptive mother Aziza. Their task is to spend time with those children and assist them with their homework where possible.
This is an account of one of our member’s past visit to Peace Home:
A group of Interactors volunteered to go to “Peace Home” after school. We all hopped on the school bus feeling both excited and nervous. I myself was pretty nervous, as I had never been a tutor.
When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by Ms Nolan and the kids. They were very eager for us to help them with their homework. I was assigned a young boy with his maths. When we began he was struggling with adding and subtracting his fractions. I gave him some tips on how to easily do them. He quickly grasped the concept and no longer had any issues with his fractions. It felt very rewarding for both of us.
It was an amazing experience helping these kids. On our way back to school, we all shared the same good feeling. We all agreed we would volunteer again.

Greetings from BIS Interact Club!
As the 2021 academic year drew to a close, the Interact Club celebrated one of the highlights of the year, which was the hand out of over 50 gift boxes at Sam’s Creche Christmas party. It was indeed an immense privilege to witness the joy in the children’s faces when they received their gifts.
So thank you for your amazing contribution. This would not have been possible without your continuous generosity.
To add, this past Saturday a few Interact volunteers paired up with Friends of Blaauwberg Conservation and they did a beach clean up in Melkbosstrand. It was a fun opportunity to contribute to the environment on a beautiful summer’s day by the sea with friends.
On a final note, our board members cannot wait to share their exciting ideas for the year ahead. Amongst those ideas, we have recently launched a plastic collection drive for the whole school. The funds raised will go to selected disadvantaged schools in Langa, Mitchells Plain and Retreat to assist them with setting up recycling collection facilities. Further details of the collection drive will be emailed via Engage very shortly.

High School Induction Day 2022
The high school Induction Day for new students took place on Friday, 14 January 2022. It was organised and led by the Student Representative Council and Matric students, who showed commendable diligence by planning this event from Term 4 and in the last week of their holidays.
Students participated in a variety of games and activities designed to help them to get to know each other better. They were also taken on a tour of the school so that they could be familiar with their subject teachers and the building before their first day. Students were allocated a house and the Year 7s met their tutor teachers.
Something new that was introduced this year was Matric Mentors. The Matric students were allocated Year 7 students who they need to keep in contact with during the school year. The purpose of this is to help the Year 7s settle into high school and encourage student involvement and effective communication.
We would like to extend a warm welcome to all our new students. May your time at BIS be enjoyable and fulfilling.

The Year 7 & 8 Art tells a lot more than a thousand words…
Teenagers are unaware of the incredible natural resource they possess: their boundless creativity. Our students are natural storytellers and the depth of their imaginations never ceases to amaze me.
And yet, students approach a blank page with trepidation. When they have to write a story, they aren’t thinking about sharing their ideas and stories. More often than not, they’re stressing about letter formation and proper spelling. However, when they start drawing freely they immediately begin to unleash their ideas. What they may not realize is that they are telling a story as they draw.
Illustrations contribute to the telling of a story. The Year 7 and 8 Art students used photography (Year 8) and paper cutouts (Year 7), inspired by the cut out artworks of Henri Matisse, to discuss and interpret details of the characters, setting and plot, thereby unleashing endless possibilities and unlimited creativity.
The main objective was to harmonise words and illustrations. They exceeded all our expectations when even the smallest details were created with small pieces of paper. We are incredibly proud of their outstanding work.

Interact 2021
As the 2021 academic year approaches an end, I look back at the many events organized by the BIS Interact Club. I admire the ability of our students to adapt to the challenges that all of us had to face somehow. Our Interact Club members’ enthusiasm and willingness to serve the community has continued forth strongly.
The ongoing support of the BIS family has enabled BIS Interact to organise a stationery drive for Du Noon Primary School, collect tons of clothing for Home of Hope, fill two school vans to the brim with food for Peace Home and deliver boxes of canned food to Amathemba School.
The sandwich-making school competition earlier this year was a gigantic success, with over 4000 content and grateful bellies on delivery day!
Our Interact members also proposed initiatives for the wellbeing of our school, such as the Friendship Day board, where our students and staff could post heart-warming and encouraging messages to their peers. Their Mental Health Awareness Drive included a “green ribbon” civvies day, which was aimed at promoting ways to maintain a healthy mind.
Our last Interact drive for the year is the collection of gift boxes for Sam’s Educational Centre. The students are busy putting together the most amazing boxes to be delivered by “Father Christmas” himself. With the assistance of our Interact members, the event will consist of a surprise hand out celebration, which will take place at Sam’s Educational Centre on Tuesday, 30 November.
We kindly request that the gift boxes be handed in no later than Friday, 26 November, wrapped and clearly labelled with the child’s name.
